Nobu

It is truly rare to find something that completely and totally lives up to its hype. Often, when something has been talked up to sound absolutely amazing, it is never as good in real life as it is in your head. Movies, parties and restaurants more often than not fall flat to my expectations. Nobu was the exact opposite.

Nobu, an international sushi chain with a flair for Asian and South American fusion, has been mentioned often in the year Eric and I have been dating. When we talk of sushi or dining experiences or Hong Kong, Nobu inevitably comes up. Eric loves Nobu so much that he bought me the cookbook so he could eat it at home. So, when he suggested we go there for our anniversary, I got nervous.

I’m not exactly a relationship pro and I have only achieved the coveted first anniversary once before, so please understand my hesitation to try a new restaurant on our special day. I was worried that something Eric held in such regard wouldn’t live up to all the expectation.

But it completely did. Thank god I listened for once! The fish was so fresh and delicious. The ambiance and the service were warm and inviting.


Everything was perfect from the ginger and cucumber martini to the man that folded my napkin perfectly every time I used the restroom. And, after I downed half a bottle of bubbly, a martini and a beer was pretty often.

I don’t even care that I’m completely hyping it up to you now. It’s that good. There is NO WAY you would be let down.

Nobu is definitely on the pricier end of things. But if you have a special occasion, or just some extra cash, this restaurant is a gem that is worth every cent.

Kanpai

I am pretty sure I am going to completely regret telling you about this place. It is already hard enough to get in on a Wednesday night and here I am going and making it worse. But, I have to tell you about my favorite sushi spot.

Kanpai is a Los Angeles gem. You would never expect that something so amazing would be wedged in between a trophy store and a good will drop off center. They have an amazingly fresh sushi selection and are always thinking outside the box.

They serve a tone of great beer and saki AND they are open till one in the morning. I mean, I’ve never been there till one in the morning, but just in case I ever need to be, my option is open.

I could go on and on, but I’m not going to. I’m just going to show you the food. Take a look, and try not to drool on your keyboard. I already did and let me tell you it isn’t pretty.

To me, there is nothing better than a restaurant that has though of every single detail. Making delicious food can be a pretty simple task, but creating a complete sensory experience it a serious challenge. When someone has though of everything from lighting to the chocolate covered corn nuts, and from the chocolate covered corn nuts to the toilet paper, I am seriously impressed.

Last weekend, Lish and I headed to Phoenix to visit her family and a couple of friends. It was in the heart of Phoenix that I was taken to Postino's. This HOT (it is in Arizona) hot spot is an impressive wine bar with unique snacks and a phenomenal motto...

On the menu, a dozen bruscetta options both sweet and savory, paninis with rich delicious soup and an amazing caramel sunday complete with chocolate dipped corn nuts and a pretzel. Yes, you read right... chocolate dipped corn nuts. Bomb.

I celebrated memorial day this year by taking a trip to visit my good friend Maggie in Chicago. Maggie swam with me in college and shortly after graduation took a HUGE leap and moved to the windy city. Did I mention she knew a total of 3 people in Chicago? Oh, and she's from Phoenix where it is really really warm. All.The.Time. We are talking serious bravery here. I can't spend more then 3 days with out seeing a family member or I freak. But... I love spending those 3 days in Chicago.

Top 5 Things I Love About Chicago

1. Maggie. Duh. She's smart and beautiful and brave and has this illuminating smile that men, women and children can not ignore.

2. The Hangge Uppe. The most amazing bar I've ever been too. Modern music on the top, classics in the basement and amazingness all over.

3. Wiener Circle. This hilarious and delicious hot dog place that is open 24 hours and rambunctious "ladies" working the counter. Seriously amazing hot dogs with onions, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and a pickle. All IN the hot dog. Seriously. Amazing.

4. The absolute beauty. From the streets, to the parks. From the lake to the weather. Chicago has true seasons, something I am so not used to but totally appreciate.

and...

5. Ian's Pizza in Wrigleyville. Very new to the list, but oh so appreciated.

The reason that Ian's is such a standout is that they take the most simple amazing flavors and turn them into a pizza.

California Burger pizza. Mac n Cheese pizza. Spicy Beef Taco pizza.

And those are just three I tried. There were tons of oh so delicious combos. I can't wait to try out making some of my own at home.
